Four years ago, the pitching matchup of Pedro Martinez-Mike Hampton would have had Cy Young implications. It's safe to say a lot has changed since the Olympics were in Athens, and the Braves were on their perennial perch atop the NL East. The Braves are no longer feared by any of their divisional rivals, at least on the road, and for good reason. In another world, the Braves' pitching staff would have still been completely healthy, and the fact that both pitchers survived 6+ innings would have been an instant classic in 2008 NL East baseball.

The Rockies have tried some different angles on this. One was to bring in sinkerballers. See Mike Hampton’s Coors line (17-10 with a 5.79 ERA in 33 starts) to see how that went. Maybe the ball doesn’t sink in thin air, either.

And that's only the pitchers. They're also missing Matt Diaz, Martin Prado and Mark Kotsay, while Chipper, Esco and now Infante are all aching in one way or another without (yet) going to the DL.

Ryan Dempster was outstanding for the Cubs last night -- complete-game gem, four hits allowed, no walks and 11 strikeouts -- so it might not have mattered if the Braves had Warren Spahn in his prime toeing the slab at the corner of Clark and Addison.

What else can happen to this team? In a span of one day, John Smoltz underwent season-ending shoulder surgery, Tom Glavine landed on the disabled list with a strained elbow, and Jurrjens hurt his ankle.
